What is a Healthcare Degree?

Students who enroll in a Healthcare Degree program may be pursuing an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in one of the many disciplines in the field. From veterinarians to dentists, there are many different careers in this industry that require varying amounts of higher education.

What kinds of Healthcare Degree programs are available?

Since healthcare is such a large field, there are many degree programs that students can enter.

For example, students who want to become medical assistants can enroll in a two-year Associate’s degree program, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports. Students who take these courses can expect to study anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, typing, recordkeeping, accounting, laboratory techniques and pharmaceutical principles.

Another popular course of study is the Bachelor’s degree program in nursing. People who enroll in these classes can expect to learn about anatomy, physiology, microbiology, nutrition, chemistry, psychology and behavior sciences. Students can also gain leadership, communication and critical thinking skills.

Degree-seekers may also choose to enroll in a medical and health services management Master’s program. This program of study could last between two to three years. During this time, students may work in various facilities to gain experience and study topics such as hospital organization, marketing, budgeting, accounting and human resources.

Students who want to become physicians or surgeons can attend one of many medical schools across the country to earn a doctorate degree. These individuals may be expected to complete four years at an undergraduate institution, four years of medical school and three to eight years at an internship and residency. Once they reach medical school, students can expect to spend two years in laboratories and classrooms studying pharmacology, psychology, microbiology, pathology and medical ethics. During their last two years, these individuals may work with patients in hospitals and clinics under the supervision of experienced professionals.

Another popular doctorate degree program for healthcare students is physical therapy, according to the BLS. Individuals who are enrolled in these programs may study subjects such as biology, anatomy, physiology, cellular history, neuroscience, pathology and behavioral science. Like physicians and surgeons, physical therapists receive supervised clinical experience during doctoral programs.

People can also choose to enroll in a variety of other programs to earn a degree in areas such as allied health, dental hygiene, diagnostic medicine, nutrition, medical imaging, pharmacy, ultrasound technology, medical records and gerontology.
